In an effort to support a local business and provide the opportunity for students to practice cooking skills, the Special Education staff at St. Benedict CSS ordered and delivered Twiggs Coffee Roaster’s Pizza Kits to each of the students from the Life Skills and Communication classes. Students were given all of the supplies needed to make their own pizza creation! Students were excited to see staff from afar and staff enjoyed seeing the pictures of their pizza creations.
St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School participated in National Teen Safety Driver week activities. Grade 11 and Grade 12 students spent the morning learning about the dangers of distracted driving and driving under the influence. They also participated in simulations and games geared toward creating awareness. The event was organized by various community partners including GSPS, Public Health and Safety and Ministry of Transportation.
This past week, students in grade 10 classes walked to Mallard’s Landing to show support in ending forced migration of people. The students enjoyed a beautiful nature walk, something forced migrants don’t get a chance to enjoy when they are fleeing wars, persecution, natural disasters or extreme poverty.
The proceeds from this dress down day will go to support Development and Peace, a Catholic organization that works to promote this cause. The effort was part of the “Share the Journey” campaign that Pope Francis launched in 2017 to show solidarity for forced migrants.
More than five hundred dollars was collected for the charitable organization.The students also completed postcards that will be forwarded to Parliament Hill. So far more than 10 thousand of these postcards have been sent to Ottawa addressed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Our annual Carousel event hosted by the Catholic Parent Involvement Committee is fast approaching! We are very excited to welcome all parents, staff and community partners to this event for an evening of networking, learning and community building!

Students had a lofty goal – to collect one thousand toys for girls’ and boys’ and as of Friday morning that goal was exceeded.
The toy drive, which happens yearly at this time is done in collaboration with TD Bank and the Salvation Army along with all parents, staff and students at the school.This is the six year the school has joined forces to collect toys for those in need at Christmastime.
School Chaplin Rob Pappin, who leads the endeavour says “It is important that we who have plenty give to those who have little. Just as the Magi brought gifts to the child Jesus, it is part of our mission to care for those in need in our community.”
The Student Senate at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board has given the gift of warmth this holiday season! The fundraising campaign was spearheaded by the Student Senate, which is comprised of 10 secondary students representing all four secondary schools in the Board.
The group encouraged staff and students to donate clean, gently used coats of all sizes to families in need. Working with Derek Cashmore of Cooper Equipment Rentals, the coats will be donated to the N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre and then made available to those in need in our region and in other communities throughout Northern Ontario. The original ask was 100 coats, however the Sudbury Catholic School community surpassed that goal, donating over 150 coats and over 50 winter accessories including hats, scarves and mitts to help families stay warm this Winter.
“The Student Senate members are not just leaders in their schools, but leaders in the greater community,” said Amanda Barry, Teacher Facilitator of the Student Senate. “The students embody the Catholic Graduate Expectations and model stewardship through their actions and their love for others. They have more plans to serve the local community in 2019, so stay tuned!”
“The amount of spirit and compassion exemplified by everyone involved is truly breathtaking,” said Kira Gouchie, Student Trustee and member of the Student Senate. “It was so amazing to see all the students come together for a great cause during the holiday season.”
The Student Senate coat drive ran from November 19 – December 7, 2018. The group is hoping to make the drive an annual fundraiser as part of their Student Senate initiatives.
More than 11-hundred personal hygiene items collected for Maison McCullough Hospice on behalf of St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School.
From body wash to bath salts and wipes, the students at St. Benedict’s Catholic school have been collecting items for Maison McCullough Hospice.
Coined the Bear Necessities Campaign a few years ago, the students collect the items in their effort to be caring family members and collaborative contributors.
This year, the students turned it into a friendly house competition. From Karhu to Urso, the houses have been collecting very specific items for patients who are nearing the end of life in the palliative care facility. Karhu took top honours.
More than 11 hundred items were collected ranging from shaving razors, dry shampoo, hair brushes, combs and diapers and will be delivered to the hospice in the coming days.
On Wednesday, March 9, 2016, Olympic Athlete Angella Goran, visited MMA to introduce FitSpirit. FitSpirit is a specialized program solely for women and girls. It is a cardio-based program, alternating between running, calisthenics and fitness. SCDSB teacher Chantal Dagostino hosted the launch, and invited female students from St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School, St Anne Catholic Elementary School, St. Paul Catholic Elementary School and St. John Catholic Elementary School who will be participating in Fitspirit to the event launch. Fitspirit is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help teenage girls discover the advantages and the enjoyment that come from taking part in physical activity. This knowledge will allow them to develop a healthy lifestyle based on realizing their own potential.
Since 2007, FitSpirit has travelled to the four corners of Ontario and Quebec to create awareness among teenage girls about the various ways they can take part in physical activity. Through the school based FitClub program, FitSpirit provides the opportunity for teenage girls to learn the basics of healthy nutrition and exposes them to activities that inspire physical activity with their friends. In Ontario and Quebec last year, over 10,000 girls participated in Fitspirit.
Last year the Sudbury Catholic District School Board had ten Catholic Elementary and Secondary schools involved with even more participating this year. In the final culminating run that was held at Laurentian University at the end of last year, there were over 286 girls who participated. This year looks very promising with a potential of over 500 girls gathering at Laurentian University on June 5th, 2016 to partake in their final task, completing either a 5 k or 10 k with over 20 schools from the Sudbury Region participating. As well, this 5k and 10 k will be open to all women and girls in Sudbury!

On Friday December 4th, St. Benedict welcomed a couple of special guests to help with the TD Bank Toy Caravan. Terry and Mell, from Q92, Sudbury’s Best Rock, dropped by to help TD Canada Trust promote their annual toy drive. St. Benedict has been a great supporter of this annual event and has collected more than 2300 new toys over the past three years to be placed under the Christmas Tree on Christmas morning to brighten hundreds of homes across the city. People from across the city were invited to drop by the school with their new unwrapped toy and in return enjoy a free breakfast sandwich. Ms. Kuzenko expressed her pride in the generosity of the staff and students, and Ms. Catalano the school’s lunchroom supervisor and Mr. Pappin the school Chaplaincy Lead battled it out in Battle of the Sexes. Terry and Mell also spoke to Ethan Jodouin and Alassandra Marone and asked why the school was so passionate about this toy drive. “Our students care about others…we want to make sure everyone has a Merry Christmas,” and so the generous number of gifts continues to grow. So far this year the school is well on the way to surpassing its goal of collecting 850 toys for children across the city.”
