Congratulations to St. Benedict Bear Emily Levesque on Joining the Cambrian Golden Shield

Secondary student, Emily Levesque from St. Benedict CSS, has recently signed a commitment letter to join the Cambrian College soccer team, the Cambrian Golden Shield. This announcement was greeted with enthusiasm by Head Coach Evan Philips, who personally came to St. Benedict to welcome Emily to the team.

According to Coach Philips, Emily has already started training with the team during the winter months. He expressed excitement about working with Emily over the summer to further develop her skills.

“Emily has already begun training with us during the winter. I am excited to work with her more over the summer as we continue her development into the OCAA and beyond.” – Evan Phillips, Head Coach, Cambrian Golden Shield.

The St. Benedict Bears family is immensely proud of Emily’s accomplishments, and they wish her nothing but success on her new journey. They are confident that her hard work and dedication to the sport will serve her well as she embarks on this exciting new chapter in her athletic career.

As Emily prepares to take the field as part of the Cambrian Golden Shield soccer team, she can be sure that she has the support and encouragement of her St. Benedict Bears family behind her every step of the way. Way to go, Emily!

St. Benedict Student, Andrew Kilby, Signs Commitment Letter with University of Waterloo

Andrew Kilby, student at St. Benedict C.S.S is taking his love of football to the next level! The 18 year old student signed his letter of commitment to play football with the University of Waterloo. Andrew completed the signing alongside his coach, Kim Labrosse.

“It’s something I have been working toward for a really long time, and it feels amazing to be here in this moment!” said Andrew Kilby. “Coach Labrosse has helped me so much throughout the years. He has made me a better player.”

In addition to his passion and talent for football, Andrew will be completing an undergrad in Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo. As a proud St. Benedict Bear, Andrew feels that the school helped prepare him for the future.

“St. Benedict is a school full of high achieving students – the teachers here really helped push me to the next level. I even had the opportunity to take a kinesiology course in Grade 11. I truly believe St. Benedict made me a better athlete and student and I feel very prepared for the next stage in both aspects” said Andrew.

Coach Kim Labrosse is very proud of everything that Andrew has accomplished.

“Academically, Andrew achieves what St. Benedict stands for. He will be an excellent addition to the University of Waterloo in that sense. When it comes to football, his work ethic is one of the best I have ever seen. He knows how to work hard, and he comes from a family that has taught him to be gracious and humble.”

“When we as coaching staff can help a student continue their dream, then we know we have done our job.” he adds.

St. Benedict brings home OFSAA gold medal banner for Alpine Ski

St. Benedict took home its first OFSAA gold medal banner in Alpine Ski this season.OFSAA Alpine skiing was held in Collingwood at Osler Bluff Ski Club under adverse skiing conditions. The first day of racing got cancelled due to weather conditions, and the second day brought white out conditions. But the athletes prevailed and brought home the first OFSAA banner after competing at this level for a number of years.

The results are as follows:

Individual Tony Piro –Silver Medal High School Level Giant Slalom
-4th Place High School Level Slalom

Team Gold Banner –High School Level Giant Slalom

Team Silver -High School Level Slalom

Monica Dailey, one of the coaches says the win is “by far the most success the school team has had to date and with only two of the students graduating, there could be more success to come.”

The team was also coached by teacher John McDonald.

Bears Win Angels Boys Basketball Tournament

In elementary sports action, Bishop Alexander Carter hosted the Angels Elementary Basketball Tournament on March 3rd and 4th. For the second time in as many tournaments the St. Benedict Boys team came away with gold. Congratulations Bears and to all who participated in this great event.

St. Benedict teacher Giuseppe Politi wins Community Builders Award

Giuseppe was awarded the Community Builders Award for Sports and Recreation. He had an outstanding career as a soccer player before becoming a qualified soccer coach. He is the boys’ coach for St. Benedict, head coach of the women’s and men’s programs at Cambrian College, the head coach at the Greater Sudbury Soccer Club, a coach developer with the Ontario Soccer Association and he coaches at the Northern Soccer Academy. He says he believes in Sudbury soccer and in raising the bar of the sport in the city. He acknowledges he is highly invested so, of course, he advocates strongly for a soccer centre, including a bubble or dome so local players have the same advantages as others across the province during the winter months. He gives a nod to former coaches, players’ parents, and officials, not wanting to miss anyone who played a role in his success. He specifically mentions his mom, Antonietta. “If I didn’t have my mother as my #1 support system, this soccer thing never would have happened.”

DJ Hancock Memorial Ball Hockey Tourney

In keeping with DJ’s memory, the Winter Carnival Committee has named their annual floor hockey tournament The DJ Hancock Memorial Tournament. The idea was first presented by members of the Student Council, and the Winter Carnival Committee supported it 100%. Money generated from the Memorial Tournament will be donated to MADD Canada.

SCDSB Hosts FitSpirit Launch for a Second Year

On Wednesday, March 9, 2016, Olympic Athlete Angella Goran, visited MMA to introduce FitSpirit. FitSpirit is a specialized program solely for women and girls. It is a cardio-based program, alternating between running, calisthenics and fitness. SCDSB teacher Chantal Dagostino hosted the launch, and invited female students from St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School, St Anne Catholic Elementary School, St. Paul Catholic Elementary School and St. John Catholic Elementary School who will be participating in Fitspirit to the event launch. Fitspirit is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help teenage girls discover the advantages and the enjoyment that come from taking part in physical activity. This knowledge will allow them to develop a healthy lifestyle based on realizing their own potential. 
Since 2007, FitSpirit has travelled to the four corners of Ontario and Quebec to create awareness among teenage girls about the various ways they can take part in physical activity. Through the school based FitClub program, FitSpirit provides the opportunity for teenage girls to learn the basics of healthy nutrition and exposes them to activities that inspire physical activity with their friends. In Ontario and Quebec last year, over 10,000 girls participated in Fitspirit.
Last year the Sudbury Catholic District School Board had ten Catholic Elementary and Secondary schools involved with even more participating this year. In the final culminating run that was held at Laurentian University at the end of last year, there were over 286 girls who participated. This year looks very promising with a potential of over 500 girls gathering at Laurentian University on June 5th, 2016 to partake in their final task, completing either a 5 k or 10 k with over 20 schools from the Sudbury Region participating.  As well, this 5k and 10 k will be open to all women and girls in Sudbury!

St. Ben’s In the Pink for October

Several weeks ago, Lindsey Jones, former St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School student, now employed by the Canadian Cancer Society (Sudbury) contacted her alma mater to see if they were up to a challenge. She asked the school if they would accept the challenge to “pinkify” their school and support a breast cancer fundraiser for the month of October. Never ones to back away from a challenge, the students and staff set a goal to raise $ 2500 by the end of the month. For every $500 raised, the students got to select one staff member to “pinkify”. The school raised money through daily donations, a pink cupcake bake sale and a football buy out game in which the Junior boys football team played the girls flag football team. Both teams also paid 5 dollars per member to take part in the game. In the end, the students surpassed the challenge goal and presented the Canadian Cancer Society (Sudbury) with a cheque for over $4000. On October 30th, as part of the presentation assembly, student council members each “pinkified” 6 of the St. Ben’s staff with lots of pink hair dye and pink feather boas. In addition, St. Ben’s grade 9 student, Willow Nadeau had her head shaved in front of the entire school and donated her locks for the third time. Nadeau volunteers every day afterschool at the Canadian Cancer Society and wanted to show her support alongside her classmates.
“We are completely overwhelmed with the response from our student council, student body and staff with this October Breast Cancer Challenge,” explained James MacNeil, St. Ben’s teacher. “The students wholeheartedly accepted this challenge. We are so proud of our St. Ben’s Bears and are grateful to be part of such a supportive school community!”

“Game-On” SCDSB Students Learn Equity and 5-Sided Soccer

On Wednesday October 21st representatives from The Ontario Soccer Association and The Ontario Blind Sports Association visited both St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School and St. James Catholic Elementary School to deliver a clinic on 5-sided football. 5-sided football is actually 5-sided soccer. It is the game of soccer adapted for the blind and partially sighted. Sudbury Catholic Specialist Teacher of the blind & partially sighted Adriano Simonato made the arrangements for this interactive presentation as he want to provide an opportunity for the visually impaired students as well as the sighted students to learn this sport. “It is another opportunity to narrow that gap between the sighted and visually impaired, increase empathy, and again, focus attention on what a visually impaired person can do,” explained Simonato. “It also simply reinforces the fact that virtually all sports can be inclusive and an opportunity for the visually impaired and the sighted to play the same sport at the same time…together!” The event took place at two venues where there are visually impaired students – St. Benedict high school (morning session) and St. James elementary school (afternoon session).
St. James principal Cara Soehner was thrilled that this opportunity was provided to her students. “At Sudbury Catholic Schools, we have a real focus on equity and inclusivity for students and staff,” Soehner explained. “Having our students, as well as some of our secondary students learn about 5-sided soccer is a great example of this focus. Learning about adaptation of this sport enables our students to recognize the importance of equity in our communities.”
